Cloverdale Rescue
In April 2005, SARS BC received a phone call from a
local pastor of a church asking us for help for one of his
parishioners.
He said that he had already called the local animal
shelter but they were unable to help him and he was then given our
number.
When he called he said that he knew of a woman that
needed help with her rabbits as "things had gotten out of hand". We
were shocked when we were told that there were approximately 25 rabbits
needing placement.
SARS BC agreed to go out, assess the situation and to
help with placing the rabbits. That weekend, we went out and were
absolutely horrified at what we saw: The mud filled yard was full of
filthy and rain soaked hutches. In addition, there were also rabbits
running loose throughout the neighborhood. This was not to mention the
piles of garbage and debris everywhere that housed colonies of rats.
Every time something was moved or walked by, rats would rush and scurry
out looking for new cover.
From the hutches we took 22 rabbits, 13 of them were 2
months and under. Amazingly before we left, we also managed to capture
all 4 of the rabbits that were roaming the neighborhood.
It was a good thing that these rabbits were caught as
the very next morning, 2 of them had given birth to a litter of 11 and
8 babies. Before the week was out however, there were another 35 babies
born. that made a total of 54 babies and 28 adults taken in from a
single household right in the middle of the city.
We have managed to have all the bunnies spayed and
neutered. Total costs for the surgeries was approximately $4500.
Many such as Caramel, Pepsi and Raven have found forever
homes but lots of others are still waiting for their turn. Please get
in touch with us if you are interested in adopting any of them.
