Marianela

Marianela was found as a stray in December 2005 and was brought to a local shelter. The shelter had too many bunnies and so we went and picked her up on December 31st. When we picked her up we noticed that she was a bit chunky but then again Mini Rexes are often a bit chunky. Just to make sure that she's not pregnant we decided to hold on to her instead of moving her to a new foster home.

Just two days after being in rescue, Nela started building a nest. We were still hopeful that it was just a false pregnancy which unspayed rabbits often go through especially considering she was housed next to an unneutered and very willing male rabbit at the shelter.

Two days after she started building a nest she stopped and destroyed the nest again. We were relieved as there are simply too many homeless rabbits out there.

Unfortunately on January 11th I woke up only to find out that something had gone horribly wrong... My beautiful little angel had passed away. Underneath some hay I found two baby bunnies. Unfortunately they too had passed away. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

Marianela was the sweetest, most beautiful little Mini Rex. Her personality had won me over within just a few hours and I had decided to adopt her myself. This beautiful little girl did not deserve this. She did not deserve to be dumped outside only to get pregnant and then die a painful death.

If you are thinking about breeding your bunny for whatever reason (experiencing the "miracle of birth" etc) please keep this in mind. Do you really want to go through this heartbreak besides the fact that there's 1000s of homeless rabbits out there?
