The Aquarium Bunnies

About two weeks before Easter 2005, we received a call from a man on a Friday evening wanting to surrender a bunch of rabbits. His girlfriend bought them. The girlfriend had already left the country and he was going to leave for Seattle the next day.

As always, Lisa & Leona dropped everything and rushed to get those bunnies into rescue. They were shocked at what they saw: Picachu the dad of all the bunnies was kept in a tiny little carrier, so small he could barely move. All the others were in a fish tank with no bedding. None of them had food or water. Because there was no bedding, the bunnies couldn't hop properly and so their muscles never developped like in normal rabbits. Springer (also known as Mia) was the runt of the litter. You can see her in the picture above stretched out on Alfalfa. She should have been the size of Darby at that point. She has a crippled arm and she was so weak that she couldn't reach the water and she had to be spoon fed.

The next day we had a fundraiser (Pictures with the Easter bunny) and the babies came along and were a huge hit. It was also incredible to see the little bunnies learning how to hop properly. By the end of the day, some of them were even doing binkies and one of them (Jeeves) even found a forever home. All but Springer (aka Mia) have since found great homes!

Eeyore snoozing in his forever home!
